05 Oct Class 3 Map Skills Expedition
Over two weekends, Roseans in class 3 embarked upon an overnight expedition in Jura to learn about map skills, navigation and camping safely in the mountains. The first day was dedicated to learning to navigate a route offline, working with professional mountain guides to understand map reading, using compasses and how to observe the local landscape. These skills were put into practice immediately to guide them to the designated summit, testing their teamwork as well as endurance for the first day’s trail. At dusk, the challenge turned to setting up camp, building tents together attention turned to toasting marshmallows on the campfire. After an early start the following day, made easier by a stunning sunrise over Lac Léman, the groups split into smaller teams to participate in the final navigation challenge: completing an 8km route using only the equipment from the previous day. The winning group completed the trek in an exceptionally impressive time of 1h30!
